Dr Matt Rowett is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and currently serves as the Regional Medical Director for Neuropsychiatry (North).
Since graduating from the University of Liverpool in 2002, he has developed an extensive clinical portfolio with a specialised focus on organic psychiatry and the complex interface between physical and mental health.
Clinical Leadership & National Governance
Dr Rowett holds several pivotal leadership roles that influence both regional strategy and national faculty standards:
Regional Oversight: As Regional Medical Director, he provides senior clinical leadership for neuropsychiatric services across the North of England, driving excellence in patient care and service delivery.
Digital Innovation: In his role as Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO), he leads digital strategy and the integration of clinical informatics to enhance patient safety and organisational efficiency.
Faculty Leadership: He is an Executive Committee Member and the Finance Officer for the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) Faculty of Neuropsychiatry, where he contributes to the governance and strategic direction of the specialty at a national level.

Dr Rowett has a proven track record of driving systemic improvements and scaling mental health infrastructure:
Cygnet Health Care: Over a six-year tenure with Cygnet, he has played a central role in the organisation’s growth, overseeing the successful development and launching of several new hospitals.
Service Design: He previously scaled Liaison Psychiatry services across Teesside in his capacity as Associate Clinical Director.
Crisis Care: He spearheaded the successful implementation of the Crisis Assessment Suite in Middlesbrough, a key development in local urgent mental health care.
Educational Foundation: His practice is underpinned by postgraduate qualifications in Healthcare Leadership and Clinical Education, ensuring high standards of service governance and workforce development.
Clinical Expertise & Experience
Upon completing specialist training in 2012, Dr Rowett initially worked in Liaison Psychiatry, accumulating deep expertise in complex neuropsychiatric conditions, including:
Functional Neurological Disorders (FND)
Acquired and Traumatic Brain Injuries (ABI/TBI)
Neurodegenerative pathologies (including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease).
He spent seven years as a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at The James Cook University Hospital, where he led multidisciplinary teams to optimise outcomes for patients with co-morbid physical and psychiatric presentations.
Research & Recognition
A recognised voice in the field, Dr Rowett was shortlisted for the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Psychiatrist of the Year award in 2014. His academic contributions include published research in high-impact journals, such as the Cochrane Library and Schizophrenia Bulletin.
